Philadelphia, PENNSYLVANIA

Former Philadelphia City Treasurer Corey Kemp was sentenced to 10 years in prison for conviction of corruption and fraud. He is the first of five caught and convicted and the first to be sentenced.

Ten individuals are alleged to be involved. See Dept. of Justice release.

A local NBC television station summarizes the indictments as, "Lawyer Bought Philly Treasurer's Office". The lawyer, Ron White, described at the NBC site as "a political fund-raiser for Democrats," was a close friend and longtime friend of the mayor. He died in November while awaiting charges. The scam was "corrupting" the city treasurer to direct which financial institututions would be selected to carry out city bond transactions.

The ten indicted include a pastor of the St. James Chapel Church. A former vice president and managing director of J.P Morgan Securities both pleaded guilty. List of stories.
